Shanghai International Forum for Women's Development (here in after referred as the Forum) came into being since 1998. It is expected, from the gender perspective, to discuss heated issues related with economic, social and cultural development among politicians, professionals, women and media workers and to seek answers to the pounding problems, so as to facilitate women's progress.

The Forum, co-hosted by Shanghai Committee on Women and Children's Affairs and Shanghai Women's Federation, runs once every the other year since 1998. The China Women's Federation and and Shanghai government have paid a close attention to it even since. Many dignitaries from the above-mentioned organs have attended the forum and presented speeches.

In the year of 2008, the Forum, collaborated with the Women's Forum for the Economy and Society from France recorded its first experience of international cooperation. Over 700 people attended the Forum with 50% of whom were male participants.

In the year of 2010, the Forum, registered as a part of the 2010 World Expo, was hosted by the All China Women's Federation. Over 200 dignitaries from over 50 countries and nations attended event.

In the year of 2012, the Forum focused its effort on issues of social culture and ecology together with UNESCO and the World Wild Fund.

In 2014, Shanghai Committee on Women and Children's Affairs and Shanghai Women's Federation are co-hosting the current forum under the topic of "Urban Governance and Women's Wisdom". The current forum is expected to provide the local community with a better understanding of women's role in the urban governance. It is reported that over 60 oversea participants are coming to attend the forum.
